1、两者的区别如下： ①when是at or during the time that, 既指时间点，也可指一段时间； while是during the time that，只指一段时间，因此when引导的时间状语从句中的动词可以是终止性动词，也可以是延续性动词，而while从句中的动词必须是延续性动词。

2、 ②when 说明从句的动作和主句的动作可以是同时，也可以是先后发生；while 则强调主句的动作在从句动作的发生的过程中或主从句两个动作同时发生。

3、 ③由when引导的时间状语从句，主句用过去进行时，从句应用一般过去时；如果从句和主句的动作同时发生，两句都用过去进行时的时候，多用while引导，如： a. When the teacher came in, we were talking. 当此句改变主从句的位置时，则为： While we were talking, the teacher came in. b. They were singing while we were dancing. ④when和while 还可作并列连词。

4、when表示“在那时”；while表示“而，却”，表对照关系。

7、when; while 当……时候while能用when代替; 但是when却不一定能用while代替.while+从句, 动作一定会延续when+延续性动词/瞬间动词; when he arrivedwhen he diedwhen,while强调动作同时发生过去进行时 : 在过去的某一点时间, 或者是过去某一动作同时发生的另外一个动作瞬间动词(arrive)无进行时态I am arriving 进行时态表示将要When he arrived,I was having dinner.同时发生的两个动作, 均用过去进行时When I was doing my homework,my mother was cooking.When my mother was doing the housework,my father was watching TV.同时发生的两个动作1.一个用一般过去时, 另一个用过去进行时2.分工的情况, 均用过去进行时When the plane arrived,...were waiting inside the main buildingwhile others were waiting on...While......were keeping guard at the door,two others opened the parcel.表面上是分工, 两个动作同时发生, 不是同时开始同时结束, 延续时间不一致, 长一点时间的动作用进行时态, 短时间的动作用过去时.When someone knocked at the door,I was having dinner.when和while引导的时间状语从句与这一时态连用。

8、所以区别when和while的用法成了这一单元的难点。

9、 （一）、when，while都有“当……时候”的意思。

10、when既可表示某一点时间，也可以表示某一段时间 。

11、在when引导的时间状语从句中，其谓语动词可以是延续性的，也可以是非延续性的，可与主句中的谓语动词同时发生，也可在其后发生。

12、 例如： I was just reading a book when she came into my room. 她走进我房间时，我正在看书。

13、 2、Were you writing when the teacher came in? 老师进来的时候，你在写信吗？ 3、When he was a child he was always trying out new ideas. 他小时候就常常试验一些新的设想。

14、 （二）、while只能表示某一段时间，不能表示某一点时间。

15、在while引导的时间状语从句中，其谓语动词只能是延续性的，而且也只能与主句中的谓语动词同时发生或存在。

16、 例如： While Jim was mending his bike, Lin Tao came to see him. 正当吉姆修自行车时，林涛来看他。

17、 2、You can’t do your homework while you’re watching TV. 你不能一边看电视一边做家庭作业。

18、 （三）、另外，when和while的区别还在于：while引导的时间状语从句多用进行时态，而when引导的时间状语从句多用一般时态。

19、 例如： While they were talking , the bell rang. 正在他们谈话的时候，上课铃响了。

20、 2、I was doing my homework when my mother came back home yesterday evening. 昨天晚上妈妈回家的时候，我正在做家庭作业。

21、when/while都可做并列连词．前者表and at that time,(这时，突然)，后者表对比，可译为”然而”I was going downstairs when the telephone rang.Lucy is in blue while Lily is in green. when后加瞬间动词 while后也可加持续性动词when和while在引导状语从句时， 都可表示“当什么什么的时候”如 　　Doctor Smith called when 或while we were preparing dinner． 　　当我们正在做饭的时候， 史密斯医生来访了 　　When 或While I was in Shanghai， I met with the pop star． 　　当我在上海时， 碰巧遇到了那位流行歌星　　【注意】 　　(1) when表示“什么什么的时候”， 从句中既可以用延续性动词， 表示状态或时间段， 也可以用非延续性动词， 表示动作或时间点； while表示“当什么什么的时候”、“在什么什么期间”， 从句中只能用延续性动词， 表示状态或时间段。

22、例如： 　　It was snowing when we arrived at the station. 　　When he came in， we all stood up， smiling． 　　I was very fat when / while I was a child． 　　When / While she was typing， someone knocked at the door． 　　(2)在when或while所引导的状语从句中， 如果从句的主语和主句的主语相同， 且动词又是be动词时， 从句的主语和be动词往往可以省略。

23、例如： 　　When / While (I was) walking along the street， I heard my name called． 　　When / While (you’re) in trouble， turn to me for help． 　　 　　2. when和while都可以表示“尽管、虽然”， 但when经常指描述的事实或结果事与愿违或出人意料， 而while在语气上含有让步之意。

24、例如： 　　The boy was watching TV when he should have gone to bed． 　　虽然那孩子该睡觉了， 但他还在看电视。

25、 　　The old couple prefer walking when they might take a taxi． 　　尽管可以坐出租车， 那对老夫妇更愿意步行。

26、 　　While I accept that he is not perfect， I do actually like the person． 　　尽管我承认他并不完美， 但我确实真地喜欢他这个人。

27、 　　While he loves his students， he is very strict with them． 　　虽然他爱他的学生， 但对他们的要求也很严格。

28、 　　 　　3. when的其它含义和用法： 　　(1) 就在那时候 (= and then) 　　We were camping on the hill when it began to rain． 　　我们正在山上露营， 突然下起雨来了。

29、 　　I was about to enter the room when the door was closed． 　　我正要进屋， 门忽然被关上了。

30、 　　(2) 倘若， 如果 (= if) 　　How can you hope for others’ help when you won’t lend your hand? 　　如果你不愿帮助别人， 又怎能指望得到别人的帮助呢? 　　Turn off the switch when anything goes wrong with the machine． 　　如果机器出故障的话， 把开关关掉。

31、 　　(3) 既然 (多置于主句后面， 语气不如since强) 　　I can’t tell you when you won’t listen． 　　既然你不愿意听， 我也不会告诉你。

32、 　　Why leave it with me when you have enough time? 　　既然你有足够的时间， 干嘛把事情留给我? 　　 　　4. while的其它含义和用法： 　　(1) 然而， 可是 　　I like coffee， while my sister likes tea． 　　我喜欢咖啡， 而我姐姐喜欢喝茶。

33、 　　I was preparing for the exam while they were chatting． 　　我在准备考试， 可他们却在闲聊。

34、 　　(2) 只要 　　While there is water, there is hope of life． 　　只要有水， 就有生存的希望。

35、 　　I’ll offer help to those poor children while I’m alive． 　　只要我活着， 就要帮助那些贫困的孩子when几乎可用于任何时态,不受限制.。
